Permaculture Potato Patch

Ryouta (WWOOFer) is planting the potatoes that were gifted to me, as they are every year, from the potato farm down the road. The patch was chosen because it is a strip of particularly persistent thistles. I hope to turn this patch of ground from one of curses and pain to one of lush growth atop of humus and nutrients.

The potatoes are sitting on top of 3-4 layers of cardboard, which will snuff out the thistles that grow there. It was quite dry when the cardboard was put down, so some soil on the edges kept it from blowing away.
Enough straw to completely cover the potatoes was put on, blocking the light. Lily helps.
My hand  to show reference (sort of. My hands are small) as to depth of straw and size of potato.
