Transplanting 2011

100 Tomato babies are being hardened off. They have languished in the house since April. 3rd weekend in May is the usual plant-out time, but I have had too many plants die by a late frost so I wait until June 1. Prior to that, they go outside in the shade every day. First for only an hour, increasing gradually until they are ready for a full day.
Basil plants get their first little exposure to sun.
The cold frame gets a lining of poly (because I didn't treat the wood yet) and some potting soil amended with worm compost. On both sides seedlings of lettuce had been started, then planted out in the garden. The space was then used for basil, the princess plant who loves sun and heat. Kept warm against the house, covered with an old house window, they will grow to be happy and productive all summer.
Lots of transplants. See at the top right, there are pots with tomatoes, also planted on the patio (bricks come later in the summer), which acts as a heat-sink for these sun/heat loving plants.
