Leduc after school art class

This was much fun! These are little (5"X 5") canvases on which the kids, 7 years old, made and decorated their hand prints with pattern and design.

I like how this age is so focused and ready for whatever challenge I throw at them and LOVE that they do it without fear!

2012 Pigeon Lake Regional High School Science Fair

I was asked to judge the local high school's science fair again this year. As usual, I felt like I was the one winning, being allowed to hang with a good number of kids I watched grow up doing a fantastic job of it. The school is ace at thanking the judges for coming, but secretly I want to thank them. I don't know if the kids realize that for how small our community is (6 grades in this school and approximately 300 kids) the number and quality of project that they are putting out is exceptional.
Below: A sterling engine! Needs only a tea light and some snow.

Below: an example of what a sterling engine can power.

Below: This young lady did a study on the mathematical equation for looking at population growth and how it could be used to warn about our extinction.

WOW! I would love to work with the girls who built this. I want to build a solar powered shower this summer.

The young man who did the following study had loads of fun crawling around, looking for all the insects and plant samples. My kind of activity!

I asked permission to snap some pics with my phone, and was careful not to take them of the kids for privacy reasons, and for the same reasons won't record their names here. They know who they are and if they wish to comment on this blog, I welcome it. Some of the pictures are not of the 5 projects I judged, but I was interested anyway and so included them. Unfortunately, I didn't get pics of the potato gun but would like to say that your dedication to something you obviously love shone thru, and the fact that farmers could be some of the top inventors of the world.  Every year I go away marveling at the eco stuff, and of course all the kids' smarts and innovation.

MMMMM! Alberta prairie landscapes, taken within 5 mins
